Nawaz Sharif Departs London for Washington DC Amidst Political Tensions

LONDON: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is set to leave London for Washington DC today, marking his first trip abroad since returning to Pakistan after years of self-exile. Sharif’s arrival in London over the weekend was met with a mix of support and protest from rival political factions, highlighting the ongoing political tensions in Pakistan.

Background of the Visit

Nawaz Sharif, president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), arrived in London late Saturday and spent Sunday at his residence in Avenfield House, located in the upscale Park Lane area. His visit comes after living in self-imposed exile in the UK from 2019 until 2023, during which he remained actively engaged in political discussions and media appearances.

Political Rivalry on Display

As Sharif arrived, supporters from both the PML-N and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party clashed, with PML-N workers chanting slogans in his favor while PTI supporters rallied against him. Police escorted Sharif’s vehicle, urging protesters to maintain distance. This encounter illustrates the continuing polarization in Pakistani politics, particularly surrounding Sharif’s leadership.

Purpose of the Trip

While several reports suggest that Sharif is in London for a medical check-up, the PML-N has not officially confirmed the purpose of his visit. Speculations indicate that upon his return from the US, he may be joined by other family members in London, enhancing the personal significance of this trip.

Journey Details

Sharif’s journey to Washington DC was preceded by a stop in Dubai, where he stayed at the residence of Hasnain Dar, the son of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. His trip to the US is described as a private visit to meet a family friend.
